Wondering fibres

Honor the maggot. Feed the maggot. Let us all pray in the church of decay. ⛪ 🪱

To decay is to surrender to the hands of the nonhuman: what rots cannot be in a position of power.

Mätäkuu presents works from 15 different artists. This outdoor exhibition is located in the wild yard of TUO TUO August 2021. The exhibition exits hibernation and reopens in September 2022. What remains of these works is in the hands of the earthworms, bacteria and fungi.

Artists:
Dylan Ray Arnold, Eevi Rutanen, Hikari Nishida, Joss Allen, Julia Strandman, Liina Aalto-Setälä, Mai Pesonen, Mari Vaara, Martta Kiikeri, Myrtillius Kauria, Oona Leinovirtanen, Riina Hannula, Sara Blosseville, Victor Gogly and Yoonsik Kim

I got interested in the sculpturality of pasta. I realised I can use it as my material
without playing with the food too much, because my companion animals eat my work. How would the forest of Joutsa secret these sculptures, how and who would eat it?

Microbes too seem to love pasta.
Macaronis and curvy pasta become analogous to the gut-brain axis. This ever signalling vagus nerve of the forest spirit in the TUOTUO forest exhibition had Molly becomings and pasta-brain was no longer central controlling organ but dispersed and distributed entity. Through material conceptionality I can study multi-species existence speculatively. I imagine the pasta brain sending signals via the bird's excreta. Arriving signals are the hungry stomachs and mouths of little animals and fungi and molds. I sprinkle some seeds of the wheat on the spot, perhaps some of them
will sprout next year too. The future pasta lives in the installation.
